Classic French Dip Sandwich

I’ll take a French dip sandwich any day, but on a cold winter afternoon it just hits perfectly. That rich, steamy au jus is the real star of the show — one dunk and you’re basically wrapped in a cozy food hug.

Instructions

The Sandwich
  1. Slice open each bun, keeping it attached if you can. Lay it open on a baking sheet.
  2. Spread horseradish sauce on the bottom side of each bun.
  3. Sprinkle the shredded gruyere on the top side of each bun.
  4. Generously layer roast beef over the horseradish sauce.
  5. Broil 30 seconds to 1 minute, just until bread begins to lightly brown.
  6. Add half slices of the provolone cheese over the roast beef. Close the sandich a bit and broil another 30 seconds to a minute until the provolone cheese melts.
  7. Remove from the oven. Cut the sandwich in half and serve with the au jus while it's all still warm. Yum!
  1. Melt the butter in a sauce pan. Add the onion and saute for about 7 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, put 2 beef boulion cubes in a small bowl with the water. Heat in the microwave on high and stir until the cubes desolve. Pour into the sauce pan.
  3. Add the garlic powder, salt and pepper, and simmer for 2 minutes.
  4. Add the red wine and simmer another 2 minutes.
  5. Tast and add more salt if needed.
